At other times there is a telephone answering machine.
An office based in the Church first took shape in the early 1990's, prior to that
all the Church administration had been handled by Vicar and Curates, generally at
home. Having an office in the Church allowed much of this to be centralised in one
It provides a central point of contact, with advertised opening hours, for enquiries
about Weddings, Baptisms, Church Hall bookings or other Church matters and a 'hub'
from which this and other information can be made available to ministers, vergers
and others who may be involved.
Having an office in Church also meant that the Church could be regularly open outside
of Service times and be available for the needs of casual passer-by or particular
visitor. The present opening hours, following the morning Services, allow the Church
to be open around 2 hours each Wed, Thurs and Friday morning.
The office was set up in the clergy vestry at the bottom of the tower. During the
re-ordering of the tower area in 1996 it was extensively re-modelled and today provides
a light and airy admin area for staff, Vicar and visitors, and still serves as the
clergy robing area for services.
Generally, 2 or 3 volunteers staff the office and Church, dealing with visitors,
enquiries and day to day admin.
